NORTH AMERICA: ROUTE Highway 1

NORTH AMERICA: ROUTE Highway 1

Highway One is the coastal route that connects San Francisco to Los Angeles. The road is very narrow but has some of the most beautiful views in the world! The majority of the route runs through an area of cliffs that have been declared a wildlife sanctuary.

The highway is fairly short (approx. 1,060 km) but along the way you can stop at any of the viewing points. These viewing points have trails that enable you to explore and enjoy the scenic coniferous forests that cover the coast. The secluded beaches and redwoods have little to do with the inland deserts, nor with the great cities of the West Coast.

Along the way, you can also observe colonies of elephant seals that migrate twice a year from Alaska to spend the summer in California. In winter, gray whales travel along the coast on their way to Baja California. As you get nearer the water, dolphins, seals, and even pelicans can be easily seen.

Carmel and Monterrey in the north and Morro Bay and Santa Barbara in the south are must-see cities along this route. Whilst travelling, enjoy restful nights in beautiful accommodation with stunning views.
